Why Is Transcendental Meditation Such a Secret Practice?

There are two main factors that contribute to the cloak of secrecy that surrounds transcendental medicine. One of these factors is the custom of keeping one’s mantra a secret. The second reason is that it will eventually turn into a very private and in-depth component of your regular meditation practice.

The first reason is one that does not need explanation. We need to honor the time-honored practice of transcendental meditation (TM).

When you are willing to go through the process of learning TM, then you will have the discipline and self-control to keep it a secret since doing so is the morally superior thing to do.

The second reason is a lot more fascinating and significant than the first. When I began practicing TM for the first time many years ago, one of the instructors informed me that I wouldn’t even want to share my mantra. At first, I didn’t understand what you meant, but after some time, I did.

Actually, it did.

When I meditate, I repeat a phrase to myself that is at the same time meaningless and very significant and private to me. The adjective “meaningless” best describes this situation. TM mantras are designed to be incomprehensible on purpose since this makes them more powerful.

Why Are Transcendental Mantras Completely Irrelevant?

This is something that, at first, a good number of people have difficulty comprehending. How is it that the mantra, which plays such an important role in this kind of meditation, must also be “meaningless”?

I really hope that I may be of use in explaining this. There are two essential components that make up a TM mantra, and they are as follows:

  • The vibrations become weaker, and it is critical that the sound get weaker until it finally stops. The mind is drawn in and calmed as a result of this allure and attraction.
  • There is no significance to the word or sound. If the term has any value for you, your brain will interact with the word, which will prevent you from transcending it.
  • You’ll be relieved to know that you won’t be required to invent your own slogan, so there’s that. TM mantras are shared with pupils by their respective professors.

They are in possession of a variety of mantras that have been handed down to them via a chain of instructors to pupils, and they will choose a mantra that is suitable for you.

The Beatles: “The Power of Secrecy” from “Transcendental Meditation”

The Beatles are the focus of a humorous and intriguing anecdote that I have decided to relate in the hopes of illuminating this topic more completely.

In 1967, the members of the band The Beatles were instructed by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, an Indian guru, in the practice of transcendental meditation (source).

Over the course of many years, a significant body of literature has been devoted to discussing their partnership with TM. In spite of all the conjecture and speculations, there are two tales and truths that continue to be constant.

The first is that the TM experience had a significant and dramatic impact on each individual member of the Beatles. The band discussed it, and even created several songs about it. This is fantastic news coming from such powerful people.

The second is a narrative that takes place on a day when they were all talking about their experiences with TM, and one of the members requested another to explain what their personal mantra was.

As far as I can tell, nobody knows who questioned who, but the event did take place.

Their approach was to only speak out if the other person initiated the conversation first. According to urban legend, nobody was ready to share their mantra to anybody else first, hence nobody ever did end up discussing it. That, in my opinion, is a perfect illustration of how effective and significant it is to keep things to oneself.

What, Exactly, Is the Key to TM’s Remarkable Success?

It seems as if there may be some mystery about how transcendental meditation works and the factors that contribute to its remarkable efficacy. My experience as a practitioner prevents me from accepting this.

It’s natural to wonder how meditating could possibly make you feel so much better, but science has a very reasonable explanation for this phenomenon.

Fascinating research has been done on TM and how it influences the blood flow to a person’s cerebellum and pons (source).

According to the findings of this research, the amount of blood that flows to this part of the brain has decreased.

This helps to explain why we are attentive yet also feel comfortable. Because it is so easy, TM is able to help people achieve a level of profound relaxation in which they are also able to maintain a state of heightened awareness.

You begin by giving yourself some easy directions to follow and by reciting your mantra over and over again until your mind begins to control the process. Going from a regular level of awareness to a profound state of consciousness is the process that is meant to be accomplished when one transcends.

A condition that all of us are now experiencing, but which is masked by the worry, tension, and anxiety that is plaguing our thoughts.

The most famous people and TM

The fact that several celebrities have spoken positively about the advantages of TM is one of the less mysterious parts of the technique.

I had mentioned the Beatles before, and at that point, we were already well into the 1960s. Since that time, TM’s popularity has continued to rise, and a wide variety of celebrities have come out to discuss the phenomenon.

Russell Brand is someone who is quite a into meditation, and I credit him as truly being someone who has helped me.

In the video that can be seen below, he discusses what TM has done for him and how it makes him feel as a result of doing it. It’s a very intriguing perspective, especially considering that Russell is quite open about it and very excellent at describing his emotions:

In conclusion

I really hope that I’ve been able to throw some light on why people assume transcendental meditation, and why, in reality, some aspects of it have to be kept to oneself.

There aren’t any genuine procedures or secrets that are being kept secret and only shared with practitioners, so stop acting like it. It is essential that the mantras that are being taught to pupils remain a well-guarded secret, and I am hoping that I have successfully communicated this to you.

If or when you start TM, you won’t share your mantra with anybody else, would you? If you haven’t already, I strongly recommend that you give it a go. I haven’t come across a single person who has tried TM and didn’t report that it had a good influence on their life, mental condition, and overall well-being.

That’s how potent it is.

No hidden agendas.

Simply an intimate and life-changing event that is inside you and is waiting to be discovered.
