Who Is Dua Lipa?
Dua Lipa is a Grammy Award-winning British-Kosovar-Albanian singer-songwriter whose smash track “New Rules” and album “Future Nostalgia” enthralled fans.
Dua Lipa is a singer and songwriter from the United Kingdom.
Dua Lipa is the daughter of Kosovar Albanians who fled to London in the 1990s and became singers and songwriters. In Albanian, her name “Dua” means “love,” and she doesn’t have a middle name. Lipa was so determined to pursue a singing career that she moved to London on her own at the age of 15. (A few years before, her family had returned to Kosovo.) Prior to signing with a label, she utilized social media to advertise herself. Lipa’s first songs was described as “dark pop,” but her second album, Future Nostalgia, had more upbeat tracks. Elton John, Miley Cyrus, and Chris Martin are just a few of the musicians with whom Lipa has worked.
Family and Early Years
On the 22nd of August, 1995, Dua Lipa was born in London, England. Dukagjin and Anessa Lipa, Lipa’s parents, departed Pristina, Kosovo, in 1992 to escape the former Yugoslavia’s turmoil. Serbian president Slobodan Milosevic singled them out as Kosovar Albanians.
Lipa’s parents were refugees when they landed in London. They worked in restaurants to make ends meet in their new residence, despite the fact that both were students (Lipa’s father studied dentistry and her mother studied law). Lipa debuted in 1995.
Around the age of four, Lipa penned her first song. Her father had been a member of a rock band in addition to his dentistry education. “My father was a musician, and music was constantly playing throughout the home,” she said in one interview. Blondie, Prince, Bob Dylan, Sting, and Pink were among her early musical influences.
Lipa’s parents decided to return to their own country in 2006 because they believed it was safe. Lipa, 11, and her younger siblings, Rina and Gjin, were returned to Kosovo by them.
Lipa was raised speaking Albanian at home, but the relocation showed that her language abilities were insufficient to succeed in school. Her Albanian became better with time. She made acquaintances who informed her about the conflict in Kosovo that had erupted while her family was in London.
Lipa was also exposed to new music through Kosovo’s hip-hop culture.
Lipa moved live with a family friend in London when she was 15 years old. She was able to persuade her parents to approve her decision since it would be beneficial to her schooling. Her genuine ambition was to pursue singing, but she believed that starting a music career in Kosovo would be impossible. In the year 2020, she told CBS News: “I thought to myself, “I want to make music, but on a worldwide scale.” I must return to the scene of the crime.”
‘Dua Lipa’ and the beginnings of her career
Lipa attended the Sylvia Young Theatre School in London, where she had previously studied before her family moved to Kosovo. In order to get attention, she also uploaded song covers on YouTube. In a 2020 interview, she claimed, “Deep down, I wanted the Justin Bieber impact where someone would discover me on YouTube!”

Lipa worked at a restaurant to supplement her income. She also joined a modeling agency, which she hoped would help her advance in her profession. However, few opportunities came her way since she didn’t want to lose weight as the agency demanded.
Lipa continued to upload songs on SoundCloud, demonstrating her dedication to music. She didn’t participate on the reality program X-Factor, but she did sing in a commercial for it. Lipa eventually received a song publishing agreement, which put in motion a series of fortunate occurrences. Lipa sought legal counsel on the transaction. Her lawyer introduced her to a management who also worked with Lana Del Rey. Lipa eventually agreed to work with this agent.
Lipa signed a recording contract in 2015. In that year, she released her debut song, “New Love.” More tracks followed, but it wasn’t until 2017 that she released her self-titled album. Until the release of “New Rules,” the album’s singles enjoyed mediocre popularity. On YouTube, the video for that smash song has had over two billion views. The album’s second hit, “IDGAF,” was certified platinum.
Lipa’s rise to stardom has brought her some criticism, such as in 2018 when she was chastised for her choreography. She, on the other hand, accepted the criticism in stride and turned it into motivation for her dancing practice sessions.
Future Nostalgia and Growing Success
Lipa won Best New Artist at the 61st Grammy Awards in 2019. That year, she also received a Grammy for “Electricity,” for Best Dance Recording.
Future Nostalgia, Lipa’s follow-up to her debut, was more intimate. While in Vegas, she came up with the title and had a writing credit on every song on the album. Lipa was getting ready to release Future Nostalgia in the beginning of March 2020. Then, just as the world was shutting down due to the COVID-19 epidemic, the record was released online. Unlike many other artists, Lipa opted to release Future Nostalgia a week early.
Lipa was hesitant to release the album because of the worldwide crisis, despite the fact that the leak had put her in a bind. Thankfully, her work was well received by the public. Lipa’s previous albums were regarded as “dark pop,” but this one was more dance-friendly. The songs had a strong resemblance to music from the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, but they also included modern elements.

The week her album was released, Lipa became the most popular female artist on Spotify’s rankings. Lipa live-streamed a performance dubbed Studio 2054 in November, with guest appearances by Kylie Minogue, Bad Bunny, and John, since touring were off the table for 2020. The stream was watched by almost 5 million people, a new high for paid views.
For the 63rd Grammy Awards, Lipa earned six nominations. Best Pop Vocal Album went to Future Nostalgia.
Causes & Activism
Lipa has spoken out in favor of Palestinians, women’s rights, Black Lives Matter, and LGBTQ rights. She has encouraged people in the United Kingdom to vote Labour, and she has endorsed Bernie Sanders for president of the United States in 2020.
Lipa founded the Sunny Hill Foundation with her father, a non-profit organization that helps Kosovo’s youth. Her family’s experiences have caused her to be worried about the future status of immigrants and refugees in the United Kingdom after Brexit.
Boyfriend and personal life
Since 2019, Lipa has been dating Anwar Hadid, a model and Gigi and Bella Hadid’s younger brother.
Lipa was previously linked to Isaac Carew before she began dating Hadid.
