Is it possible to keep a panda as a pet?

Take a closer look at the Panda to understand why they wouldn’t make suitable pets even if you were permitted to get them and learn more about them.
Begin by discarding all you believe you know about pandas!

There are a lot of misunderstandings regarding panda bears, and this is one of them.

 

People believe they are cuddly bears that can be cuddled. 

This could not be farther from the truth, as we shall discover in the next section. I don’t know what it is about their looks, but it makes them seem more like a cuddly toy than a potentially deadly bear.
In such case, I suppose it’s only natural that your initial instinct is to rush in and start cuddling the poor animal.
In addition, they do not sneeze on a consistent basis
It is not uncommon for pandas to be left alone for up to (at least!) 10 to 15 hours a day, while they consume bamboo. They are not sociable creatures, and they don’t like being caressed or rubbed on the back, which is understandable.

 

So why am I unable to get a Panda bear as a pet?

The principal reason for this is because they are a threatened species on the endangered species list. All Giant Pandas (including those in zoos) are owned by the People’s Republic of China, including those in zoos. Allow us to set that fact aside for the time being and examine how one may go about maintaining a Panda as a pet. a. Pandas seem to be quite attractive and charming, but in reality, they are not particularly friendly.

There have been several reports of individuals being attacked by pandas when they approach too near to them in a zoo or in the wild. They have razor-sharp claws and a powerful bite, making them dangerous predators.

 

How much does a Panda set you back?

As previously stated, China is the exclusive owner of all pandas on the planet. This implies that each Zoo is required to lease the facility from the Chinese government, as explained above. They will generally do so for a period of ten years, with the contract costing about one million dollars (!). And that figure is for each year, so the Zoo’s 10-year deal will cost around $10 million.

 

This is one of the primary reasons why you won’t find pandas in every zoo, despite the fact that they are one of the most popular creatures in the world and are found in almost every zoo in the globe.
Not to mention the fact that we haven’t even begun to discuss the costs of maintaining a Panda. Please be advised that they will predominantly consume bamboo. Every year, the Zoo in Edinburgh spends over $88,000 on bamboo, mostly to keep the pandas content.

 

A panda as a pet is, however, not permitted for another compelling reason. Because even if you were able to persuade the Chinese government that you were the ideal candidate, you (most likely) couldn’t afford to retain it for more than a few weeks! Even if they provided it at no cost to you.

What about red pandas, are they allowed to be kept as pets?

 

For those of you who are still daydreaming about pandas, you may be interested in learning if you can keep a Red Panda as a pet.
The red panda has a similar appearance to the large black and white Pandas. This species is much smaller and looks more like a raccoon than anything else. Sorry, but you won’t be able to maintain a rent pit. They are prohibited from being kept as pets under the terms of the Washington Convention.

 

 

They are also recognized as an endangered species on the IUCN Red List.

According to current estimates, there are around 5000 red pandas remaining in the world. Around 80 percent of them are housed in zoos. Consequently, if you want to get a good look at the Red Panda, that’s definitely the best spot to go.

 

 

What about other nations such as India, the United Kingdom, Canada, and so on?
No. It is not possible to keep a Panda as a pet anyplace in the world. Or, for that matter, get your hands on a copy of the book.
Because, as previously stated, the Chinese government owns all of the Pandas, it is not permitted for anybody to purchase or sell any of the animals. Anywhere.

Pandas are enormous (and sometimes deadly) creatures!

The third reason why you are unable to have pandas as pets is because they are really large!

Many people believe that pandas are adorable small animals that can be hugged and carried around like a dog.
They aren’t, in fact. This species is often referred to as Giant Pandas, and there is a solid reason for this. From shoulder to shoulder, they are around 5 feet long (150 cm) and 3 feet tall (90 cm). The males may weigh up to 350 pounds at their peak (160 kilograms). Consequently, as you might guess, you couldn’t transport it and you couldn’t walk it on a leash either (like a dog).

 

 

Pandas are members of the bear family, and as such, they are more likely to act in the manner of a brown bear than a domestic dog. It’s unlikely that there are many tales involving pandas attacking people, but that’s largely due to the fact that there aren’t many pandas left in the world.

 

 

What is the strength of a panda?

Oh my goodness, it’s powerful! Keep in mind that we’re talking about a bear that weighs 350 pounds (160 kilos). They have the ability to bite very hard, which is necessary in order to shatter the bamboo sticks with their bare teeth. During their awake hours, they spend the majority of their time munching bamboo.

A fully grown panda can only purchase around 600 pounds of force. That’s two times the power of the Pitbull, to be precise.

As a result, you would never want to come face to face with the panda. Most especially around mealtimes since he does not like having his supper disrupted!

In fact, the mother Panda will often give birth to two young panda twins at the same time. One in every two pregnancies results in this outcome. And when that occurs, the mother will take a close look at the two newborn pandas and choose the one who is the strongest. It is the weakest baby who will die of malnutrition as a result of the mother’s preference for the strongest.

 

 

While this may seem to be cruel, it is just the way things are in nature. Because the mother is simply unable to feed all of the young pandas, she will prefer the largest and strongest of them.

1) The Pandas have six fingers on each hand.

They have a little thumb and five fingers on each hand. This brings the total number of fingers to six. They are excellently suited for grabbing bamboo, which is the primary function of their massive paws.

This unique trait can only be found on the front paws of the dog. The rear paws have a total of five digits.

 

 

2) Pandas are really quick.

Pandas can run at speeds of up to 20 miles per hour (30 kilometers per hour). That’s a significant improvement above the speed of humans.

Pandas in captivity are unable to sprint as quickly as their wild counterparts because they live a more leisurely lifestyle and so do not have to. Remember that they are never pursued or chased by anybody, and that meal is brought to them every single day.

 

 

3) Newborn Panda cubs are quite little!

When a Panda cub is born, it is very little due to the fact that the mother Panda is so small.

 

It is pink all over its body, and it is unable to see at this time. It may be as little as 0.2 pounds in weight! (100 grams). That represents barely one-twentieth of all human newborns. Consequently, they have a long way to go before they achieve full size as their mother does.

According to National Geographic, the tiny cub is born with a circumference of barely 6 inches (15 cm) during its birth. That’s about the size of a pencil, to put it another way.

 

 

4) Pandas eat continuously throughout the day.

Pandas consume around 50 pounds (23 kilograms) of bamboo every day, on average. In order to chew and digest such a large quantity of bamboo, it normally consumes it throughout the majority of its awake hours.

They will eat for up to 18 hours a day (usually 12 hours) if given the opportunity! Consequently, there isn’t much time left for anything other than chewing its way through the stack of bamboo!

They will ultimately consume other foods as well, such as vegetables and, sometimes, meat. Bamboo, on the other hand, accounts up 99 percent of the meal. As a result, it is a rather simple diet.

 

 

 

5) Panda bears do not hibernate throughout the winter months, as previously stated.

During the winter, other bears will often hibernate, or at the very least spend the majority of their time sleeping. These individuals do so in order to save energy, and their body temperature will decrease to match the temperature of their environment.

The Pandas, on the other hand, are different.

Pandas will often migrate south instead of north. As a result, they are able to achieve higher temperatures.

 

 

 

6) We just recently discovered that Pandas are really bears.

Until 1995, we assumed that Pandas were a subspecies of raccoon, similar to the Red Panda, which resembles the Giant Panda in size and appearance.

Science has now discovered that the Panda is really a bear, thanks to extensive testing and sequencing of its DNA.

 

 

7) The Panda is capable of producing (at least) 11 distinct sounds.

Despite the fact that we do not understand what these 11 distinct sounds represent, scientists have detected them.

They have the ability to growl in the same way as other bears do, as well as bark, huff, and squeak. The young Panda infants will usually make charming squeaking sounds while they are playing.

 

 

 

What can I do to assist in the conservation of pandas?

Panda-like pets that are not as common as they once were

Considering that the panda is one of the most well-known creatures on the planet, it is not surprising that people have named a variety of alternative pets after it.

Alternatively, individuals have dressed up their dogs to resemble pandas in rare instances.

Panda Dogs are a kind of dog that is native to China.

Panda dogs are, in essence, canines that look like Pandas. It is not a distinct breed in the traditional sense, but rather a grooming technique.

Japanese fashion has gained popularity in recent years as a result of this phenomenon.

Some individuals will not really color the dog’s fur, but will rather Photoshop it and publish it on social media instead of coloring it. And, if you ask me, this is more preferable than having your talk go through these processes in person.

 

 

 

 

 

This new tendency has also elicited a great deal of opposition from the pet community, which is understandable. People feel sad for the dogs, and they believe that their owners have turned their pets into accessories. This is something I agree with. However, it is a quite amusing trend, which is, I guess, why it has received some media attention in recent months.

The most often heard response from the owners of these panda dogs is that the dog is in no way harmed. Only non-toxic and completely safe coloring is being used (of course!) However, I continue to believe that this is an odd and misguided tendency.

People often referred to the Syrian hamster as a “Panda Hamster.”

In fact, the Panda Hamster is just a Syrian hamster with black and white fur, not a particular breed of hamster. If you ask me, they don’t look much like a Panda, but they do have black and white fur, which is similar to a Panda.

If you happen to come across a Syrian hamster with perfectly black dots around its eyes, you must be quite fortunate.
